hudsonx1Sometimes I just get one of those feelings that if I bypass a celebrity at an autograph show, I’ll come to regret it. In fact, there are numerous celebrities out there that I wish I had had that feeling – long after it was too late. The Hudson Brothers didn’t even make the cut onto my ‘maybe’ list quite simply because I had never, ever heard of them. And it’s little wonder really; even as a consummate music fan and collector, I wasn’t all that familiar with stars of the early and mid-1970’s, especially if they neither cracked the end of the year Top 100, nor ever had a number one hit.

But there are plenty of folks who certainly remembered the Hudson Brothers (comprised of three brothers: Bill, Brett, and Mark) as both musical artists (they got to #21 in the weekly charts with a song called So You Are a Star) and they actually had their own variety series The Hudson Brothers Show, and later a Saturday morning show entitled The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show. Had I been just a bit older, I’m sure I would have enjoyed these hip, razzle dazzle guys.

So how hip were they? Well, Bill Hudson was hip enough to have married both Goldie Hawn and Cindy Williams. With Goldie, he had actor children Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson. That’s pretty impressive right there.

Brett Hudson went on to be a television producer, including a show called The Secret History of Rock ‘n’ Roll hosted by Gene Simmons. He also sang back up on Ringo Starr’s Christmas album I Wanna Be Santa Claus.

Mark was so hip that he didn’t even show up at the Hollywood Collectors Show on April 21, 2012.

But coolest of all was that they were selling Bill’s new book 2 Versions: The Other Side of Fame and Family, which could be autographed by both brothers, plus a signed photo (I somehow wound up with two), and a photo op with them both for just $20. That was as hip as it gets.

And now I feel hip that I’ve taken yet another step forward of being  connected to 70’s pop culture. It was sooo worth it.

Celebrity encounters from the Spring 2012 Hollywood Show will continue
