"Bean Bag Exchange!" - Brad, second-grade gym class

2com4.jpgSo far the score of racking up trophies in Myrtle Beach condo competitions was this: Briana – 2, Brittney- 1, Brad – 1, Ashleigh – 0. Ashleigh wanted to get a trophy, dammit, and there was nothing that was going to stop her. When there was a trivia contest with a trophy going to the winner announced, she even had my Mom take her to the local library to find the answers to a batch of puzzlers about the city of Myrtle Beach. She nearly swept this contest – only missing a half a point – but some other numbskull had turned in the form with all of the correct answers.

But on the morning of Tuesday, August 1, the dawning of the new month brought fresh hope for more victories. Ashleigh, Briana, and I all took part in the ping-pong competition. Briana and Ashleigh both did very well in this challenge, but did not advance to the finals. I did, in fact, advance to the final Ping-Pong battle (and lost). The ping-pong game was a well-deserved victory for the other party and so none of us won trophies in these games.

That night we took a break from the intensely competitive games and enjoyed a relaxing, yet somewhat nauseating evening at the Pavillion. The next morning, we leapt out of bed, dashing off for the next opportunity to win Ashleigh a trophy.

On Wednesday afternoon, it was on to cornhole. This outdoor fiasco in the blazing heat was attended by about a dozen or more people. I was resigned to not playing, but got roped into it by some lonely soul without a partner. Mom and Grandpa also formed a swarthy alliance. There were two cornhole sets and the one we played on was as far from regulation as we are from China. The bean bags weighed about as much as one square of toilet paper. Somehow, we managed to win a couple of games, while across the the yard at the other cornhole set, Ashleigh and Briana were racking up several victories of their own.

Now, I didn’t care anything about this competition, and had absolutely no loyalty to my dim-witted partner – so I fully intended to throw the game so Ashleigh could get her trophy. But I’m here to tell you that Ashleigh and Briana mopped the floor up with us regardless of how well or poorly I might have played. Briana got her third trophy and Ashleigh got what she wanted all along…her first.

And in Myrtle Beach in the Summer of 2006, we were all winners…and life was swell.

Next up: our last night ever at the Pavillion
