Only three actors have appeared in all six of the films in the Rocky series: Sylvester Stallone, Burt Young, and Tony Burton. Burton, who began his career as a real-life boxer, played Tony “Duke” Evers in the films. He did such a great job in the series’ first entries as the trainer of Apollo Creed, that he eventually became Rocky’s trainer. His film career didn’t stretch too far outside of the Rocky series, but he did have appearances in such films as Assault on Precinct 13, The Toy, and Hook – as well as a slew of television roles.
I met Tony Burton on July 18, 2009, during his appearance at the Burbank Hollywood Show. Initially he wanted to charge Bob and me an extra fee to get a photo with him, but we both balked at that – so he decided to throw in the photo op for free with the purchase of a signed photo. It is unfortunate that so many of the photos that some of the celebs have available are merely screen shots…and not in the correct proportions.
After I got the photo and walked away, I noticed that it was smudged and returned to ask him if I could trade it in. For some reason he thought that I hadn’t purchased the photo there that day, until I pointed out that pose on his table. He lightened up then, gave me a new signed photo, and let me keep the smudged one.
So obviously he was a nice guy – even if he may have taken one or two too many punches in the head.
Celebs of the Summer Hollywood Show will continue…
Great photo with “Duke”! I have been trying to find a show that he would be at on the east coast, but have had no luck. Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks!!
