Of all of the celebrities whom I met at the Hollywood Celebrities Show in Chicago on Sweetest Day, October 17, 2009, Julie McCullough was perhaps the sweetest of them all. Although she is most noted as being the February 1986 Playboy Playmate who was fired from her role on Growing Pains when Kirk Cameron became an evangelical Christian and had her canned, I was most interested in talking to her about something completely different. Her great great uncle (or someone in that proximity of the family tree) was Paul McCullough, one half of the unique 1930’s comedy team Clark and McCullough. Oh, and she was still pretty hot too.
Since I already had a signed photo of her and wasn’t spending any money with her, I was mega-impressed with how incredibly friendly she was. She talked to me awhile about the Clark and McCullough comedy team, telling me how she was completely taken aback when she was told about McCullough’s gruesome death (he slashed his own throat with a straight razor while in a barber’s chair). I mentioned my friendship with Dick Bann and told her that he was how I found out that she was related to Paul McCullough. She knew him quite well.
Julie was extremely kind to both my Mom and me, and gladly posed for the photos here. I had two taken because it gave me longer to have her arms around me. As I left her presence, I told her that both Clark and McCullough were from Springfield, Ohio, very near to my home. If she ever wanted to tour their birthplace, just look me up. Of course since she didn’t have my name or address, this would prove most difficult.
What can I say? I get a little tongue-tied around lovely Playmates who talk vintage comedy.
Celebrities of the Chicago collectors show will continue…
Hello Brad,
I was linked to your blog by a Google Alert I set for Julie.
I’m so thrilled you got to meet her. I’ve been a fan since Julie’s Playboy appearance. From what I’ve read of her and by her, she seems like a great girl and fun to talk with! Wish I would have known she was here in Chicago. I would have tried to see her as well.
Thanks for posting the picture. She really is a beauty. And better than that, a great person too. She didn’t let the Growing Pains thing knock her down. Really something to admire. Lucky you for meeting her!

I’ve met her twice and can say she is a lovely person, both inward and outward! She is extremely kind and charming, and hasn’t lost one smidgen of her beauty.
