sally3Sally Kellerman is best known for her portrayal of Margarent “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the 1970 Robert Altman film version of MASH. She would even be nominated for an Oscar for this role. It is almost unthinkable that she actually declined to reprise the role when the TV show M*A*S*H was being cast. Instead she opted to continue with her film career, starring in several more of Altman’s films including Brewster McCloud, Welcome to LA, and The Player.

Of course, it was because of her pivotal role in MASH that I was interested in meeting her when she appeared at the Chicago Collectors Show on October 17, 2009. Her fee was a bit exorbitant – $20 for a signed photo and $20 to get a picture with her. I most certainly would have probably bypassed her altogether had I not gotten such great deals on the other celebrities present at the show. Still, there we are…me and Hot Lips…which these days aren’t quite as ‘hot’.

  1. I actually remember her best as the English professor who was wooed by Rodney Dangerfield in “Back to School.” “Hey ladies, wanna check out my Longfellow?”

  2. YES! Back to School was some of her best work! Probably under contract NOT to divulge her best on-set Rodney stories.

She did a lot of commercial voice-overs too, right?
