…but it was a rather expensive one at that. Paper Moon, the 1973 comedy-drama film that is set in the black and white era of Prohibition ranks highly on my list of favorite films. Ever since I discovered this movie, I shared it with Ashleigh and Briana among others, and the consensus is that it is a timeless classic. It starred the father and son team of Ryan O’Neal and Tatum O’Neal, and it was in fact the then-10-year old Tatum who was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. To date, she is the youngest recipient of a competitive Oscar.
Although I probably love Tatum in The Bad News Bears almost as much as this film, and I already had a Little Darlings photo, which I had gotten signed by Kristy McNichol, just waiting for Tatum’s signature, I decided that I would get the most bang for my buck by having Tatum and Ryan sign the photo above when they appeared at the Hollywood Show on Saturday, April 24, 2010.
Ryan was a nice guy and I was willing to pay the $25 for his signature along with another $20 to get a picture with him. But when the first photo showed that he was either talking, chewing, or growling as the camera snapped, I had to insist on an additional shot. This one came out well. I also asked him to add my favorite obscure line from the film “Eat your Coney Island!” He obliged, partially, as you can see.
I told his handler that he looked like he was gabbing in the photo and they responded “oh, he always looks like that.” Nevertheless, they let me take another one with him. I, of course, told Ryan that it was me who looked bad in our first picture…

After I gave Tatum her $25 to sign the photo and add her signature quote from the film, I snuck back behind the table and posed for a picture with her. I heard her asking her handler, “Are we supposed to be charging for pictures?” Since their queues were extremely long and they had been doing this for several hours by the time I got up there, I would have thought that they would have had this ironed out in advance. Either way, I was thrilled to have a nice dual shot signed by the O’Neals with individual photos of me with both.
