"He don't want me. He wants the other monkey." - Stan Laurel, "The Music Box"

My Nerd-quest continued. The Hollywood Show had done a pretty good job of assembling a smattering of the cast members from the classic 1980’s comedy Revenge of the Nerds. I have already posted my encounters with characters Takashi, Betty Childs, and Booger (found here). Now I present to you the rest of the Nerds present at the show on Saturday, October 9, 2010.

Up first in the posting was the very friendly Larry B. Scott, who had played the effeminate Lamar Latrell in the film. Unbeknownst to many, Larry had also been one of the first competitors from the Cobra Kai clan in The Karate Kid to have his butt whipped during the All Valley Tournament by Daniel-san. I had Larry sign the cast shot seen at the top of the posting (which is actually from Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise), as I did all of the other remaining cast members, plus the previously discussed Booger (Curtis Armstrong).

While all of the other performers were charging $20 per signature (which included a photo op with them), head nerd Robert Carradine, who had played the character of Lewis Skolnick must have felt that he was nerdier than the rest of his cast members, so he was charging $30. In real life, he wasn’t nerdy nor rude nor friendly. He just was. He signed the photo, he posed for the picture, and I moved on down the line.

Although I didn’t much care for the abhorrently nerdy character of Poindexter in Revenge of the Nerds, I must say that Timothy Busfield had about the most lucrative post-Nerd career (besides Anthony Edwards of course). In fact, I almost felt that signing photos as part of a Nerds reunion was a little beneath him. He had starred successfully in two dramatic series Thirtysomething and one of my favorites, The West Wing. It was tempting for me to say to him, “doesn’t it kind of blow to be remembered for this!’

But hey – I wasn’t complaining. I had been thrilled with meeting six key members of the cast, most of whom were reasonably priced, and generally friendly. It was too bad that Don Gibb hadn’t shown up and that the show hadn’t gotten Anthony Edwards, Ted McGinley, Matt Salinger, John Goodman, Bernie Casey, James Cromwell, or Andrew Cassese. Maybe a show in the future…

Celebrity encounters of the Fall 2010 Hollywood Show will continue
