I had no particular fondness for or attraction to David Hedison, who had starred in two James Bond films as Bond’s ally Felix Leiter in Live and Let Die and License to Kill. I was a bit more interested in the fact that he had portrayed the central protagonist in the 1958 horror film The Fly alongside Vincent Price – although I have never actually seen the film. My friend Bob had picked up a free signed photo of Hedison from that film and passed it onto me.
When Hedison was making an appearance at the Chicago Hollywood Collectors Show on Saturday, September 18, 2010, I thought I’d bring along the photo and take a crack at getting a free photo with him. Unfortunately Mr. Fly was not receptive to this notion. The buzz from him was that the ever-elusive THEY were forcing him to charge for this privilege. So since I had gotten the signed photo for free, I went ahead and slipped him ten bucks to get the shot – feeling as though I had been caught in the web of lies.
I remember there was a day when once actors were human – even as you and I.
