"It was so pitch, you couldn't see your hand behind your back." - Stan Laurel, "Atoll K"

dennylaine1.jpgEx-Beatles, while often sharing songwriting credit with a partner, usually didn’t need to share lead vocal duties with anyone. John had his Yoko…and Paul had Denny Laine. Denny sang lead vocals on no less than six songs on various Paul McCartney and Wings albums, including one of my favorites, The Note You Never Wrote on Wings at the Speed of Sound. In all, Denny Laine played guitar on seven Wings records and two of Paul’s other solo albums, Tug of War and Pipes of Peace. Outside of Paul himself and his wife Linda, Denny Laine was certainly the most recognizable of the Wings band members.

I could have kicked myself for forgetting to bring a Wings album or CD cover to have Denny Laine sign while he was appearing at the Winter 2007 Hollywood Collectors Show – especially after seeing the pathetic array of paperstock photos that he was selling…ones that didn’t even picture him with Paul or Wings. Because of the utter lack of selection, I boycotted purchasing any, but I did ride on the coattails of Bob’s puchase and had my photo taken with the former bandmate of the legendary Paul McCartney. He’s wasn’t a Beatle but he certainly came closer to being one than I or anyone I have met ever has…and that’s huge!
