I’ll admit it. I watched Cagney and Lacey at some point during its seven-year run throughout the 1980’s. It was a female cop show that tried not to exploit the fact that the cops were women, barring of course the telefilms known as The Menopause Years. Tyne Daly played one of the female police officers. Let’s just be nice and say she was the ‘less glamorous’ one. She was the tough, gritty brunette who had the bulk of the street smarts. I can never remember which was Cagney and which was Lacey. But she was one of them.

She was (and is) also the sister of actor Tim Daly, who starred in one of my favorite shows, Wings, and was the voice of Superman in Superman: The Animated Series from 1996-2000. This has little to do with Tyne Daly, but she does have a sort-of Superman connection by virtue of her younger brother.

So what else had Tyne done, you might ask? Well in addition to playing either Cagney or Lacey, she starred in the TV series Judging Amy, and played parts in TV series such as Columbo, Grey’s Anatomy, Mission: Impossible, The Nanny, and – hey! what do you know? – Wings!

Oh, it might also be mentioned that she won a Tony Award for Best Performance of a Leading Actress in a Musical for her role in Gypsy: A Musical Fable in 1989. That sort of brings us to my encounter with her. She was one of the performers in the S.T.A.G.E. (Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event) production of Original Cast 2 on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex in Los Angeles. She performed the song Job Application/Fifty Percent from the show Ballroom.

I caught her outside after the show. Although she was seemingly chatting with everyone else as she walked out, I managed to get her to sign a nice shot that I had just purchased that day at the Hollywood Show, and pose for a photo with me. Well, she posed on the second attempt anyway.

Whether you know her as Superman’s sister, Gypsy, Cagney, or Lacey, I have to say it was quite a pleasure to get to meet Tyne Daly.

Celebrities of the 2011 Original Cast production will conclude in the next posting

  1. You know, I had completely forgotten about her “Mission: Impossible” apperance. I remember her from a signficant role in an episode of “Magnum, P.I.”

And if you’re bringing up her family, let’s not forget her Father, James Daly. He was great in so many shows (including “Mission: Impossible”), but I’ll always remember him best for stopping at Willoughby in “The Twilight Zone.”

  2. She was Lacey.

  3. They tried (kinda) to make her Dirty Harry’s love interest in “The Enforcer”.
