In general, movies don’t get all that much better than Back to the Future. The premise was enough to successfully sustain two sequels. The characters were likeable enough that you just kept wanting more. One of those actors whose appeal makes the films as great as they were was Christopher Lloyd, who portrayed Emmett “Doc” Brown. Sadly, I had missed the Back to the Future reunion when it was held in Burbank during the Spring of 2009, so person by person, I’ve been trying to catch up with as many as possible. I finally got my chance to meet Christopher Lloyd at the Chicago Wizard’s World Comic Con on August 13, 2011.

The line to get to see this icon of such classic films and shows as Taxi, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, The Addams Family, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and a Cheers two-parter, was, in a word, insane. When I first saw how it stretched across the auditorium, broke apart, and then reformed elsewhere by the snack bar, the only thing I could mutter was “Great Scot!” – only I substituted the word Holy for Great, and something else for Scot. So I decided to weigh my options and priorities, and forego getting an autograph from Christopher Lloyd

This meant no photo ops at the table, which I don’t think he was doing anyway. The only other option: pay the outlandish $40 fee to get the professional photo op from Froggy’s Photos. So I chose this outlandishness.

I had about 11 seconds to shake his hand, greet him, and smile for the camera when it came time for my turn during his prescribed time for taking photos. When I went to leave the event that night, my photo hadn’t been printed, but I eventually got it mailed to me along with a jpeg. I was extremely grateful that it hadn’t been lost. Otherwise I might have need to find a DeLorean with a flux capacitor and try to do it all over again.
