The novelty of meeting Dave Ketchum will likely escape those readers who have never watched Get Smart. It’s true that his faced popped up often in a variety of sitcoms – including but not limited to The Andy Griffith Show, I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster, That Girl, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Green Acres, The Odd Couple, Alice, Mork & Mindy, Happy Days, and Perfect Strangers. But for all of the popping up he did in these shows, these roles pales in comparison to the way that he popped up in Get Smart in (ironically) thirteen episodes of the series.

As Agent 13, the type of ‘popping up’ he did in Get Smart was usually in the literal sense – whereby he would pop out of garbage cans, cigarette machines, locker, fire hydrants… you get the picture (and probably haven’t forgotten it).

So in the spirit of this novelty performance, I was pleased to meet Mr. Ketchum at the Hollywood Show on April 21, 2012. The price of $20 was just right, and the fact that he was posing for free made me actually feel bad that he had spent so much time inside garbage cans and the like…but he wasn’t complaining, would you believe?
