"Your car is uglier than I am!" - Carol, "American Graffiti"

After seeing Rob Schneider’s act and discovering that the Funny Bone comedy club in my own hometown of Beavercreek was hosting some banner names, I started scouring their website to see if there were any other comedians that I wanted to see. Turns out there was one coming up right away, so I booked a solo ticket to see Brian Posehn on Thursday, September 6, 2012. So off I went again for a nice evening to myself, enjoying a pretty decent bleu cheese burger, a Dr. Pepper, and an evening of comedy.

I didn’t actually know Brian Posehn by name, but when I saw his picture on the site I immediately recognized him as the actor who played Kevin Liotta in 29 episodes of Just Shoot Me. He had also been in the Seinfeld episode The Burning, and had parts in sitcoms BeckerFriends, Empty Nest, and NewsRadio. Okay, he is not the most famous sitcom star in the world, but to me he was worth catching. I wasn’t disappointed one bit.

The show opened with comedians Jerry Snyder and Geoff Tate, both of whom were quite good. Brian’s act was a little over an hour and quite funny – as long as you like self-deprecating jokes about pot smoking, flatulence, masturbation, and the condition of the male body once it begins to show horrible signs of aging. Yes, it sounds crass, but when it was delivered by him it somehow works perfectly, and you get the feeling that he would be a great uncle to have.

I was the first one out of the show and found him standing there in the lobby/bar area of Funny Bone. I approached him right away and this time being prepared, I had him sign a copy of his comedy CD Live In: Nerd Rage. Other than doing my impression of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs (which he had attempted during the show), and then telling him that I really enjoyed the show, our encounter was brief. A line had quickly formed behind us and I didn’t want to take too much of his time.

I handed off my new camera to the person behind me and got a nice photo of the two of us. He looks even sloppier than I do.

I’m already excited for my next celebrity encounter at Funny Bone later this year, which if it pans out will be a biggie for me.
