I must caution you that if you’re going to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, ignore the hype that surrounds it and don’t expect some over-the-top exciting science fiction extravaganza. That was what I did the first time, and I came away sorely disappointed wondering why nothing exciting ever happened in this film. Years later, I re-visited it, now knowing that there was nothing earth-shattering that took place in the film, but still knowing full-well that it had been critically acclaimed. After this second viewing, I came away loving the film – amazed at its depth and beauty, understanding how cool the special effects really were, even though on the surface there appeared to be none.
Once I had developed this appreciation, it made me ecstatic to find that Kier Dullea and Gary Lockwood, the two leads who were onboard the Discovery One spaceship bound for Jupiter in the film were going to be present at the Hollywood Show on April 21, 2012. Although I know they’ve both made personal appearances at shows in the past, this was the first time that I had ever encountered either one of them.
Although each has a respectable resume in their own right, I was largely unfamiliar with much of their work outside of 2001. Kier Dullea (above), who has acted in films within the last five years, was the most friendly, engaging with his customers and talking about how he had assumed that the Hollywood Show was a horror/sci-fiĀ convention and thus, only brought along photos from 2001.
Gary Lockwood (directly above), who has been largely retired from acting since the mid-1990’s, scarcely uttered a word – not that he was unfriendly, but just silently fulfilled my request for signature and free photo. While I was getting my photo with Dullea, I asked him to closer so that I could attempt a photo with both of them.
That’s pretty darn cool, if I do say so, to get a photo with the two lead actors from a film consistently ranked in the top ten best films ever made. I just hope HAL didn’t mind…
Celebrities of the Spring 2012 Hollywood Show will continue…
That is a great meeting.
I’m somewhat surprised by your initial reaction to the film, but hey, you did ultimately come around and this is not a forum for debate…
