Following our daylong trip to Savannah (which followed two trips to Plains and Americus and one to Warm Springs), Ashleigh and I were pleased to be able to take a few hours of our Georgia trip to just sleep in, relax, swim, and take in a few sights leisurely.
An unexpected surprise was the nearby location of President Woodrow Wilson’s boyhood home, just a few blocks over from our hotel in Augusta. So after the world’s crummiest home-cooked buffet, Ashleigh and I swung by the hotel, picked up Bob and headed for the historical site.
It was actually one of the more interesting Presidential homes that I have visited, and our tour guide was quite animated and enthusiastic. He had a genuine love for the subject matter and was thrilled to regale us with tales of how the home’s restorers had painstakingly gone to extreme measures to replicate the original carpeting, curtains, and decor.
Wilson had re-visited his home one time as an adult and pointed out that the dining room table was still the same one that was in the house when he was a boy. His wife asked how he could possibly know that and he responded that he often scratched up the legs under the table and the marks were still there…and they still are now. This, along with a window in the home into which the future President etched his initials with a diamond, was one of the more fascinating elements of our tour.
