It wasn’t long ago that I put up another posting about a menacing liquid metal killer from the Terminator franchise, and now I’m ready for one more. This one was the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day, introducing the world to one of the scariest villains you’d ever hope to meet – a killer who could take the shape of anyone or anything, usually something sharp and capable of piercing a victim’s body at will. It was also one of the most advanced special effects coup to date when the film came out in 1991. I for one was ecstatic to get the chance to meet the actor who played him, having missed at least one opportunity in the past.
Robert Patrick was his name and he was appearing at the HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati on March 22, 2013. Coincidentally, less than a week later I’d see him on the big screen at Universal Studios Orlando, reprising his role as the T-1000 in the T2 3-D: Battle Across Time ride attraction.
I wasn’t too familiar with many of his other roles, outside of his cameo appearanceĀ in Last Action Hero, but it turns out that he was in a few other great films such as Cop Land, Ladder 49, Walk the Line, and Flags of Our Fathers. He also had a prominent role in The X-Files and a recurring part in The Sopranos. In short, he’s a busy actor.
He was also in a talkative mood when Carolyn and I approached him to purchase a signed photo. He was a rather costly $40, but was posing for photos for free, and even posed in an extra one with Carolyn. Somehow we seemed to connect and he asked where I was from. When he heard that I was from Dayton, he told me how he had lived in Kettering for several years and attended John F. Kennedy Elementary School. He would have gone to Fairmont high school had he not moved away, so was interested in who my Mom was when I told him that she had attended that high school. I kidded my Mom the whole next week that the “liquid metal” guy had been asking about her. But hopefully not in the same way that he asked for Sarah Connor.
He was a nice guy and very friendly to both Carolyn and me. Of course when I told him that she was my girlfriend, he told me that I must be doing something right. Always one to metal in others’ affairs…
Celebrities of the Spring 2013 Cincinnati HorrorHound Weekend will continue…
I really liked him as the addicted gambler in “The Sopranos” — certainly my favorite role of his.
