mich1I’ll admit that at times some of my celebrity encounters are a little obscure. That is most certainly true in this example, but in this case the operative word is not obscure, but little. Like to the tune of two feet, nine inches tall little. At the Hollywood Show in Los Angeles on April 20, 2013, I met a Hungarian man named Michu (real name: Mihaly Meszaros) who has been billed throughout the years as the ‘shortest man in the world.’ That’s not quite true, but damn, this guy was short! So exactly who is he, you ask? Well, he only seems to tout two things about himself: that he was often the guy who was inside the costume of ALF – the alien life form on the series of the same name – and the fact that he was friends with Michael Jackson.

But there were other things that were more interesting as far as I was concerned. His appearance in Waxworks, H.R. Pufnstuf, or Big Top Pee-Wee weren’t among them though. Nor was the fact that he was a baby stunt performer in Look Who’s Talking. What intrigued me the most was something I didn’t find out until shortly after my encounter when my friend Steve Cox told me that he had been featured on the cover of the Doors album.

Yep, that’s him right there:

Our encounter was kind of fun too. He was only charging ten bucks for an autograph, and his handler mistakenly told me that a photo op was included with it. She tried to charge me and I argued. But then when I saw how little he was, when I saw what effort he went through to position himself for a photo, when he slapped me on the chest and said “whatta ya want?” and it felt like I had been hit with a shoelace, and when he gave Carolyn a kiss on the cheek when he posed with her two…well then after all that, I gave him the extra $10.

Steve also went on about how he had been wanting to meet him for years and was thrilled that he had shown up at the show. This made me appreciate the encounter even more, and it yielded a wonderful profile picture on Carolyn’s Facebook page. Michu, it really was nice to meetchu.
