allen2I won’t say that Karen Allen has been a lot of my favorite films, but the ones she’s been in have been doozies. I mean really… how much bigger can you get than Raiders of the Lost Ark when it comes to beloved classic films? She of course played the female lead Marion Ravenwood opposite Harrison Ford. She’d make a return to that role more than 25 years later when she starred in Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That one was no classic, but who’s complaining? Naturally when Karen Allen showed up at the Chiller Theatre Show on April 27, 2013, I was tempted to go with the Indy connection and get a photo with that, which is what my friend Peter encouraged me to do.

But ultimately I stuck to my roots. She’s had great roles, not only in the Indy films, but also Scrooged, Malcolm X, The Sandlot, In the Bedroom, and The Perfect Storm – but none have enchanted more than National Lampoon’s Animal House, in which she played Katy, the frustrated girlfriend of Boon, who ultimately steals away with her professor and has an affair.

Yes, even though I know that a signed Raiders photo would have probably proven to be the wiser investment, and even though I was a bit disappointed in the scant selection of Animal House photos, I had to go with the photo of her as Katy.

She was also extraordinarily nice, even though I wasn’t all that happy about the hefty $40 price tag for the autograph/photo op combo. I tried not to bore her with any of my incessant Animal House quoting (hello Eric Hubble!). After all, I know how bored she had become entertaining some kid from Pig’s Knuckle, Arkansas…so I didn’t want to risk it.
