There are quite a few reasons that one might be interested in Mariel Hemingway. Literature buffs would be captivated about meeting the granddaughter of famed American literary giant Ernest Hemingway. Or cheesecakes buffs – or perverts – might be interested in the fact that Mariel Hemingway was a Playboy covergirl and appeared in a magazine pictorial, as well as portraying Playmate Dorothy Stratten in the acclaimed Bob Fosse film Star 80. Oscar buffs and Woody Allen fans would know Mariel as the Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actress of 1980 for the film Manhattan. Sitcom fans would know her from her appearances on Roseanne and Becker.
I happen to be all of the above… and more. Even with all of those possibilities, when I got my chance to meet Mariel Hemingway at the Chiller Theatre show on April 27, 2013, I opted to purchase a photo of her with Christopher Reeve from the admittedly less-than-par 1987 flickĀ Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
She played Lacy Warfield, the daughter of a tabloid tycoon who buys out the Daily Planet and appoints his daughter Lacy as the new editor. Naturally she gets into a love triangle with Lois and Clark, and possibly a quadrilateral if you count Clark and Superman as two separate individuals.
If I were to tell the truth, and like Superman, I always do, I would admit that Mariel was on my list and it wasn’t until I took a gander at her array of photos that I recalled that she was even in Superman IV. But once I did, and once I had laid down my $25 for the photo and an additional $10 for the photo op, I snatched up another Superman autograph for my collection.
No matter what you know Mariel Hemingway best for, you’ll have to admit this is a pretty cool encounter. Her grandfather Ernest’s name may last longer in the annals of human history, but then again, he never starred in a Superman movie.
