swSteven Williams’ relevance as an actor is right up to date with his most recent recurring role on the TV series Supernatural – which I’ve never seen. In fact he boasts a rather lengthy filmography that includes such interesting inclusions as The X-Files, The Bernie Mac Show, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, 227, Gimme a Break, Dallas, The Dukes of Hazzard, Doctor Detroit, and a small part in Twilight Zone: The Movie. He also had a starring role in the TV series 21 Jump Street

But if you want to know the honest truth as to why I purchased a photo op with Steven Williams for $20 when he appeared at the HorrorHound event in Cincinnati on March 19, 2016, you’d have to go all the way back to the one of the earlier film credits of his career. He played the seemingly humorless Trooper Mount in the classic comedy musical The Blues Brothers.

He is one of the persistent officers giving chase to Jake and Elwood throughout the film. One of my favorite lines comes quite a bit after Elwood’s declared address sends the troopers to Wrigley Field. John Candy, who played Detective Burton Mercer, says “I kind of liked that Wrigley Field bit,” to which Steven Williams as Mount replies with as much contempt as he could possibly muster, “Yeah, real cute.”

Steven Williams the actor was a very nice guy, full of pep, and hardly looking a day older than he did in 1980 in The Blues Brothers. We posed for our pictures, and then I turned to him and said (naturally): “I kind of liked that Wrigley Field bit.” To which he looked at me in all seriousness and responded: “What was that?”

Okay, he had no idea. I explained it to him, and we got a good laugh. But he still didn’t remember it. His line from 36 years ago obviously meant more to me than it did to him. Yeah, real cute.

In any case, it was a fun encounter and always a treat to meet someone who had a part in one of my childhood classics.

Celebrity encounters from the 2016 Cincinnati HorrorHound will continue…
