"It was so pitch, you couldn't see your hand behind your back." - Stan Laurel, "Atoll K"

I love lots of things about 1984: my friends, my memories, the TV shows, the music, the movies. It all seemed to be good stuff, even if it wasn’t so good. VHS tapes were still in vogue, as was HBO, and I utilized both to watch and record the Brian DePalma thriller and sort-of Hitchcock rip-off film Body Double. While his Dressed to Kill has received some critical acclaim, Body Double had been slammed pretty hard. I want to say it has gotten better with age, but it’s actually gotten sort of worse.

But I don’t care. I loved it then and I love it now, and some of the critics have even come around, and it’s developed a rather hefty cult following. If you haven’t seen it, and you plan to, I won’t reveal the nature of Gregg Henry’s character Sam Bouchard (seen above right). He is either a really gallant hero and friend to the main character Jake Scully (Craig Wasson) or a complete slimeball.

In any case, he was memorably played by Gregg Henry, and I was very pleased to learn that he was going to be appearing at the HorrorHound Weekend event in Cincinnati on March 22, 2015. Although I was happy, he seemed like an odd choice to resurface more than 30 years after Body Double, but of course, mostly unbeknownst to me, he had kept quite busy in the acting world.

I’m generally not much up on mainstream current TV, but he had been starring in numerous shows in recent days including Scandal and The Killing, not to mention a role in the popular genre film Guardians of the Galaxy. He had also been a recurring character in the popular series The Gilmore Girls, and for Trekkies he had starred in the film Star Trek: Insurrection and on the series Star Trek: Enterprise. But the only appearance I vaguely remembered was when he starred in an episode of Moonlighting, which went back to 1985, just a year after Body Double.

I wasn’t really in the market for an autograph, although it might have been nice if the price was right, but in this case I settled just to get a photo with him for $20. He was a really nice guy and we reminisced a bit about Body Double, a project he said he greatly enjoyed. He kindly also allowed me to snap a photo of him with Carolyn, so I’d say it was well worth it and I’d chalk it up as a swell encounter.
