Texas Sunday: Waco to Huntsville

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

hunt15.jpgWe awoke on the morning of Sunday, March 30 in our little room at the Lighthouse B&B in McGregor, Texas ready to embark on another fun-filled day of historical traveling arcross the huge and great state of Texas. Our hosts Jerry and Jan Walters had prepared a scrumptous homemade breakfast of eggs, sausage, and waffles. Bob and I were the only guests in the inn other than Jerry’s in-laws. We had a nice breakfast with these overt Republicans whom Bob almost kicked under the table when they began their Clinton-bashing. But they were still nice folk and the breakfast was delicious and filling. Read the rest of this entry »

Andrew Johnson and Me

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

johnson10.jpgHistory seems to waver back and forth when deciding if Andrew Johnson was good for our country or not. Having survived John Wilkes Booth’s plot to overtake the government when his would-be assassin lost his nerve, Andrew Johnson was sworn in as our nation’s 17th president following the death of Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. Charged with the monumental task of the post-Civil War Reconstruction, Johnson would feud openly with Congress who wanted harsher treatment of the southern states. Disneyland and California Adventure ’05

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

diz11.jpgSince it had been eight years since I had been in California, obviously it had been eight years since I had been to Disneyland. This would also be my first time to Disney’s California Adventure which had opened in 2001 – built in the former Disneyland parking lot. Jimmy and I woke up that morning, had a bite to eat, and then made a brief pit stop elsewhere in San Pedro.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade ’08

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

pat8.jpgThe centerpiece and reason for the trip Chris and I took to Savannah was the St. Patrick’s Day parade held on Friday, March 14. For some unknown reason, this particular parade in Savannah had become one of the biggest in America to celebrate the holiday, equalling, if not surpassing, the magnitude of the parades in Chicago and New York. Although, the winding, twisting streets made it difficult to maneuver many giant floats around the squares, it was still an excellent parade lasting over three hours. Read the rest of this entry »

The Beginning of a Texas-Sized Trip

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

dal7.jpgIt is amazing what can be accompished in just one week. I like trips that are so busy that they seem to go on forever. Not always relaxing, but definitely more rewarding. It is kind of odd to put it into terms like this, but on the morning of Saturday, March 29, 2008, I had not yet visited Texas. I had never been to Dallas, Fort Worth, Crawford, Waco, College Station, Huntsville, Houston, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Uvalde, Johnson City, Stonewall, Bonham, Denison, or Parker. And now just one week later I have seen all of these places. Pretty amazing.
