Matlock’s Right Hand Maiden

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

ns3It was fun to watch the TV drama series Matlock on Sunday evenings or on sick day afternoons. The show wasn’t breaking any entertainment records, but it was certainly pleasant enough fare – especially for fans of Andy Griffith and his homespun southern disposition. I had watched it now and then through the years and liked it enough to be interested in meeting any of the co-stars whom I happened to run into. I had already crossed passed with Matlock’s TV daughter Linda Purl in 2001, and at the Hollywood Show in Burbank on August 4, 2012, I got to meet her second-season replacement, Nancy Stafford, who would star as Matlock’s new friend and law partner Michelle Thomas from seasons 2-6. Batman and Robin

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

batman2I’m sure that Adam West can be a nice guy. He seems to be a fan favorite when he gives interviews or speaks in panels. I’ve even heard that he sends out free autographs in the mail. But from all personal accounts of meeting Adam West, who starred as Batman in the cult classic TV series from 1966-1968k, he is – oh what’s the word? – a prick. I had already met and gotten an autograph and picture from Burt Ward in 2005. I saw him again in 2007, this time with his counterpart Adam West at a Hollywood Show in attendance. My encounter with him then was not good, as he referred me to his equally pricky handler (who may or may not be his son, I’m not sure), who told me that Mr. West wasn’t ‘doing photos’ that day. Piper Laurie

Friday, December 21st, 2012

piper1I always liked the sound of Piper Laurie’s name, but for years I couldn’t put it with a face. But eventually I discovered that she had starred in a wide variety of films, many to great acclaim. From her classic role in Has Anybody Seen My Gal to her Oscar nominated parts in three (count ’em, three!) movies – The Hustler, Carrie, and Children of a Lesser God, – she has been proven to be both incredibly versatile and remarkably talented. She even played the role of Auntie Em in Disney’s Return to Oz, and starred as Catherine Martell and her alter ego Mr. Tojamura, a Japanese man, in Twin Peaks. Read the rest of this entry »

Sgt. Slaughter

Friday, December 14th, 2012

ss1It was clear that Robert Remus, better known as Hall of Fame wrestler Sgt. Slaughter, could go either way as being a good guy or a bad guy in professional wrestling. On one hand, he could be the overbearing, militant bully who feuded with the likes of fan favorites Bob Backlund or Pat Patterson. On the other, he could represent America’s toughness as he feuded with The Iron Sheik. And if we had a third hand, we could talk about how he turned heel again when he aligned himself with Iraq and began wearing a turban into the ring. This actually prompted death threats from over-zealous fans. Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t Call Him Biff

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Tom Wilson, formerly known as Thomas F. Wilson, has made no secret of his irritation with fans who only know him as Biff or Griff or Mad Dog Tannen from the Back to the Future trilogy. He has refused multiple offers to appear at reunions, reality shows, and autograph signing events that would allow him to easily capitalize on this role. He’s even made public statements that he no longer signs autographs and his stand-up comedy act conveys a humorous disdain for geeky fans who ask him to pose for pictures, repeat lines from the movie, or to sign autographs. So I had very little hope of ever getting to meet this fine actor, and knew that if I did, there was no way I wanted to get on his bad side. Read the rest of this entry »
