Elvira, Mystery of the Dark

Monday, April 8th, 2013

elvira1I honestly have no idea how the character of Elvira – this mistress of the dark – seeped into the national consciousness. It’s a mystery to me. To date, I can’t recall seeing one thing that she actually did. Not that there aren’t things. Oh, there’s the guest commentary she did for WrestleMania 2 back in 1986, there are TV specials in which she acts as ‘hostess’: VH-1 documentaries, E! True Hollywood Stories, even a Playboy Halloween special. But I really don’t think I ever saw any of it. Well…maybe the wrestling thing. Of course, Elvira is just a character played by Cassandra Peterson, who even outside of the character has starred in some things too: Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie, and even a bit part in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever. But’s it’s Elvira that has brought her all the fame. Read the rest of this entry »

The T-1000

Friday, April 5th, 2013

metal2It wasn’t long ago that I put up another posting about a menacing liquid metal killer from the Terminator franchise, and now I’m ready for one more. This one was the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day, introducing the world to one of the scariest villains you’d ever hope to meet – a killer who could take the shape of anyone or anything, usually something sharp and capable of piercing a victim’s body at will. It was also one of the most advanced special effects coup to date when the film came out in 1991. I for one was ecstatic to get the chance to meet the actor who played him, having missed at least one opportunity in the past. Read the rest of this entry »

A Little Bit of Everything in L.A.

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

bob2There are certain days in my life where I feel like I am unabashedly raking in every drop of fun that can satiate my wide varieties of interests. Monday, January 14, 2013, just so happened to be one of those days. I had already spent a very enjoyable weekend at the Hollywood Show meeting scads of celebrities, visited Disneyland twice, attended the memorial service of Our Ganger Peggy Ahern, eaten one of the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, visited the Grammy Museum, and hung out on Hollywood Boulevard. It would seem that this had been a great weekend without any extras, but there was more to see… more to do… more to experience, as many of my interests intertwined into a few further adventures with my friend Bob. Five He Slew in Halloween II

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

hwxxI’m not sure exactly how or when it happened, but at some point somehow some way, I got sucked into the whole slasher flick phenomenon, particularly when it came to the three biggest (by my estimation) ‘classic’ franchises: Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween. It’s perhaps the many horror film conventions I’ve attended, which started out as a way of meeting celebrities who had done ‘other’ noteworthy films, that have gotten me hooked. Eventually the urge to collect all of the Jasons and Michael Myers was followed by a tendency to start picking up even the minor stars/victims. The Final Girls from the Friday films was a lot of fun, and then all of the hoopla surrounding Jamie Lee Curtis’ appearance at the Horrorhound Weekend event on November 17, 2012, also became too much to resist.
