birthfoot.jpgThe country was still reeling on October 2, 1971 (exactly 35 years ago today). A major theme park had just opened the day before in Orlando. It was called Walt Disney World and I would remain close friends with it to this day.

I came into this world at 9:10pm. My Dad was in the waiting room watching All in the Family (Archie and the Lock-Up for the record). My Mom had been put under, so I virtually came into the world alone with no one to fuss over me. My my, how nothing has changed.

I weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz., a healthy size with a full head of blonde hair. At least it was blonde by the time my parents actually saw me and all the muck had been cleaned away.

That is all I can remember about my birth. I was told later that I was born in Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, Ohio and delivered by Dr. Thesing, who would remain our family doctor for many years. Ashleigh and I still visit the same office

Despite the press that Disney garnered, I still managed to sneak in there in this posting in the October 4 edition of The Journal Herald. The Dayton Daily News ran similar coverage of my birth on October 5. Interestingly, you will note a girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goff. This girl named Sherry and I attended high school together and often talked about having the exact same birthday. Today was the first time I ever noticed that she was listed in the same birth announcement. I also proudly share my birthday with an eclectic group of comedians: Spanky McFarland, Bud Abbott, Groucho Marx, and Laurel and Hardy music composer Leroy Shield.

Above is my card and wristband from the hospital. Below is the earliest photo of me that I know of. I am five days old here and already on the bottle. This was taken at our house on John Glenn Road. Below that is my birth certificate, proving that I am human – or at least was at one time.

  1. I have to take exception to the fact that there was no fuss over you. I knew that I had a baby boy as I was being put under. I wanted to see you as soon as I awoke, but the nurses wouldn’t take me to see you until about 2 am. You were the most beautiful baby I had ever seen, blonde hair and striking blue eyes and it was love at first sight!

  2. Yeah, that was five hours later. Where was the hoopla? Where were the parades?
