Brad's Musings and Meanderings

random acts of quoting

"After viewing the situation from all sides, Mr. Laurel says that he is thoroughly reconciled to the fact that the moving picture industry is still in its infancy." - Radio announcer, "Me and My Pal"

ruck.jpgCameron Frye pulled a bit of a fast one along with his pal Ferris Bueller when they successfully plotted to skip school in the classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. He ended up paying for it though when he accidentally destroyed his father’s carefully preserved Ferrari. So it was in this spirit that I pulled a bit of a fast one on the actor who played Mr. Frye…Alan Ruck. I am a big fan of Ferris Bueller, and I’ve enjoyed some of Mr. Ruck’s other roles – namely in Speed, Three Fugitives, and as the male school teacher who gets raped by a woman in one of my favorite shows Picket Fences.

As was his Spin City co-star Barry Bostwick, Ruck was charging $20 for a signed photo and an additional $10.00 for a photo with him. Even though both gentlemen were very nice guys, I still object to the thought of paying the $10 merely to get a photo with them – especially after spending $20. So after Bob purchased his combo of a signed photos and a picture with him, I sneaked in and had Bob snap a picture of him and me as well. Then I passed up on purchasing a photo, so no one ever charged me for getting the photo with him. Simple.

Was that wrong you might ask? Well, the next day – Sunday, October 5, 2008 – I returned to the scene of the crime and purchased one of his signed photos from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. So yeah, he made some money off of me but I didn’t feel quite as oppressed. As Cameron might say, “When F*rrell came to Cameron’s land…let my people go!”

  1. Always wanteed to meet Alan.I was lucky enough to see some scenes being filmed of Ferris back in 1986.Despite being a Chicago film, parts were filmed near me in Long Beach.Ferris’ home is there and I watched the final scene, the one with ths bus, being filmed just a few blocks away from the home.Little did I know I was watching a classic being filmed.Wish I had my camera that day!
