I’ve gotta be honest: when it comes to Sally Kirkland, I knew almost nothing about her. But when it comes to the Academy Awards, I know plenty. And there was a point – in 1987 to be exact – when Ms. Kirkland’s performance in the movie Anna garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. In  case you didn’t hear me, I said Leading Actress! But circling back around, when it came to that particular movie, I knew virtually nothing either.

But the fact remains that it is quite amazing that amidst a sea of small parts in plenty of films that I knew quite well – like The Sting, Blazing Saddles, Private Benjamin, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, JFK, and Bruce Almighty, for example – that Sally Kirkland could have landed a leading role that would lead to an Oscar nomination!

I was so impressed with this that I happily shelled out the $20 at the Hollywood Show on April 2, 2011, to pick up a nice autographed photo of Sally as she appeared with the Golden Globe Award that she won (!) for that same role in Anna. This movie is clearly a flick that I need to check out.

And okay, for those fellow Blazing Saddles buffs who might be wondering exactly where Sally Kirkland appeared in that film…she was the waitress at the end of the great pie fight: Yankee Bean soup, coleslaw, and tuna surprise…
