"Hey, I have an idea. Let's not let the box of rats ruin our lives." - Mike, "Friends"

hmc4I became enamored with the TV drama Picket Fences upon first seeing it in 1992. By extension I also developed a bit of a crush on two of the female leads in the show, Lauren Holly and Holly Marie Combs. The latter played the Brock family’s eldest daughter Kimberly. Little did I know that 20 years after our introduction on television, I’d get the opportunity meet both of them. I’ve already covered my encounter with Lauren Holly here. My first meeting with Holly Marie Combs actually came earlier.

Understandably, I was elated to find that she was appearing at the Chiller Theatre show on April 28, 2012. Although had become even more famous for her starring role as Piper Halliwell in all eight seasons of the hit supernatural drama Charmed, and starred in the Oscar nominated Born on the Fourth of July, I was a bit disappointed to find that she didn’t have any photos from Picket Fences.

I obviously expressed my interest in that series and mentioned how I had discussed her performance in the episode Terms of Estrangement with none-other-than Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr. She seemed genuinely interested and very friendly and told me that Mr. Gossett had sent her flowers after the show, feeling bad about his character being so rough on hers. I considered Holly to be the deal of the show, as photo ops with her came for free with the purchase of a $30 autograph. I had no choice but to go with the photo from Charmed. Having already met Shannon Doherty once, I may have to obtain another signature if I get the opportunity again.

I ran into Holly Marie less than four months later at the Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago (at which time I first met her co-star Lauren Holly), and when she wasn’t busy I stopped to greet her and thank he for being so nice before. Again, she was the consummate professional and very friendly.

It’s always especially nice when someone you’ve long admired is exceptionally nice to you.
