American Pie was to the 1990’s as Porky’s was to the 1980’s. Neither film is for everyone, and they both have their share of raunchy and titilating moments. But behind it all was good kids with a lot of heart and raging hormones. I think both films are a little more like real high school life than most of us would like to admit…and that’s what makes them so much fun. I’ve already discussed my meeting with the Porky’s guys, as well as my first encounter from American Pie. Now here’s another…
I didn’t really know Thomas Ian Nicholas from anything but American Pie when I first met him on November 18, 2012, at the Days of the Dead event in Chicago. But it made sense that he was there as he had also gone on to star in Halloween: Resurrection three years later.
He also went on to reprise his role as Kevin Myers in the three sequels to American Pie. When I met him, I was a bit disappointed that he didn’t have any photos from the original film, but he did have a nice shot of himself from the most recent sequel that had just been released that year, American Reunion. I opted for that and was pleased to find that he was a super friendly guy.
We discussed the fact that I had been disappointed that he had had to cancel his appearance at the Knoxville Fanboy less than a month earlier, but I was glad he made it to Chicago. I also told him that I really respected the fact that after making the $25 puchase of his signed photo that he willingly posed for free pictures with him. I told him that others often charged an additional fee for this, and how much it disgusted me. He seemed to agree.
The proof was in the pudding when Carolyn and I ran into him almost a year later at the Fall Hollywood Show in Los Angeles. His prices were exactly the same, and Carolyn actually made her one and only purchase that day from him. He had been the lead actor in one of her childhood favorite films Rookie of the Year. She bought a nice signed photo form that film for her brother James, and had it personalized with a quote from the film (“Throw ’em the high stinky cheese”). He talked to both of us about his musical project and concert tours. Incidentally, Thomas indicated that he recognized me from meeting me almost a year earlier. Another point in his favor.
To use the phrase that I often do when a celebrity is particularly nice and reasonalby price, he’s “one of the good ones.”
