"This isn't the stuff that chased Steve McQueen in "The Blob" is it?" - Julie Burton, "It's Your Move"

diary1thumbnail1.jpgContinuing with my diary from 1980…

February 16 – I got up (7:00) and watched “Psycho.” Then we went to “Holiday on Ice.” It was neat! Then I came home. Mark came over for his knife (He left it here for the longest time) then I was watching “Kids World.” (We taped it) Dad said come here and see how good you can read. I saw my NAME in the paper! Then we went to Grandma Range’s house. (with the paper) We did card tricks. At home we figured them out.

img760.jpg–My parents had this little blurb put into the Beavercreek News as a way to reward me for my good grades in second grade. What a perfect surprise for a kid my age – I ate it up! I remember doing these card tricks (the kind that seem to work themselves), and then analyzing them later to see what made them actually work. The entry still sounds funny.

February 17 – After church I came home. Lee called and said “could you go sled riding”. I said “Yes.” I asked mom and she said “no.” I called Lee back (426-4902) and told him to come over at 12:00 (Little Rascals was going to be on). On a commercial Lee called and said he didn’t want to come. After Little Rascals I watched “Psycho” then we watched  “Bohemian Girl.” Then Kenny and Sandy Rutherford came over. Then we ate supper (Noodles, mash potatoes, and Green Beens).

–I swear I wasn’t trying to be funny with this entry.

dressed_to_kill.jpgFebruary 18 – Presidents day – No school – Today I went to Grandma’s house. We play “Yahtzee” and a nother game. After that we went to the Library. They weren’t open Because President’s day. Then we went to Gold Circle. I was going to get a KISS record but Mom and Dad said “No.”

–How cruel. Perhaps they were not familiar with the Big Seven yet. I’m betting the other game I played was the now-famous family game “Farkle” that didn’t have a name back then.

February 19 – After school I went to Lee’s house with a coloring book (But I didn’t use it) and two hats. We played “Brad and Lee” Lee gave me a book called “The official Pete Rose Scrapbook.” Then he came to my house. I felt sick (I broke the thermometer). Lee went home. then I ate supper and watched “3-2-1 Contack.” the Mom read to me out of my new book then I watched “The Muppet Show.”

mad208.jpgFebruary 20 – Today I stayed at grandma’s house. I layed (on a fold out couch) most of the time. Some of the time I watched TV (I ate soup, Grilled cheese sandwich, and potato chips) I am sick. Dad brought Denise and I a book. mine was “MAD.” Denise’s is “Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Surprise.”

–Another tremendous milestone confined to this brief period of time. My very first MAD Magazine! I eventually became a collector and today have a massive collection of MAD Magazines…and it all started here. Despite the premature date on this issue, this was the very one that got me hooked.

February 21 – Today I stayed home. I watched “Blotto,” “Towed in a Hole,” “Brats,” “Teacher’s Pet”, “Wild Poses”, and “Shiver my timbers” Mom also read “MAD” to me. We had baked potatos and steak. I have the Flu!

February 22 – George Washington’s Birthday – today I stayed at grandma’s house. I layed on the fold out bed most of the time and watched TV some of the time. I wasn’t realy sick but just to make sure I stayed. I came home and read “Mad”. I watched “This is Your Life Donald Duck” while we taped “Pink Panher.”

February 23 – I got up and watched cartoons. Mom is sick. Today I layed around most of the time Becasue I want to go to the “Sons of the Desert”. We’re joining a club called that. I did my school work.

February 24 – After church I watched “I Love Lucy”. Then I went to Ben’s Birthday party. And now the Best part! We went to a “Sons of the Desert” meeting! We watched “Zorro”, “Fantasia”, “You’re Darn Tootin'”, “Two Tars”, “Them Thar Hills”, and “Tit for Tat.” I talked to Carl (grand sheik). He had a lot of Movies and Books.

img762.jpg–I have many wonderful memories of tent meetings of our “Towed in a Hole” chapter of the Sons of the Desert, based out of Springfield, Ohio (our first newsletter after joining is seen at left). Carl’s house was equipped with a small room which served as a theater. In the back of the room was a smaller area absolutely littered with film (8mm and 16mm) and a projector that showed film through a square hole in the wall. The theater room itself was adorned with photos, autographs, and a display case with memorabilia. It was my first glimpse of a collector’s paradise. Carl had a heavy influence on me becoming a collector of film memorabilia and autographs. Carl still attend Sons conventions and it is great to see him every other year. I, of course, now have my own tent.

February 25 – After school I came home. I watched the snow blow a little while. It blowed lick Heck! I also watched “Elvis.”

February 26 – The roads are bad. Today I stayed at Grandma’s. Ben was there we fought. Mom says I was bad but I’m not. I came home and watched “Tic Tac Dough,” “Muppet Show”, “Happy days”, and Laverne and Shirley”. Then I took a bath.

February 27 – Today I went to school we had special classes (every Wed.) (Started: Feb 6, 1980). The teacher read to us. after school Mark came over. We played “TV Tennis.”

February 28 – Today there was no school. The roads we went to Grandma’s house for a little while. Susie, Chris, and Kari was there. Susie and I played “Shenanigans” (a game). Mom and I went to (Denise stayed at Grandma’s) “Fazios” and “Ontario.” I got a “Archie” comic book called “Reggie’s wise guy Jokes.”

–No wonder I loved this time period so much. I was off school more than I was in. This game “Shenanigans” was one of my favorites. You could only find this game at my Grandparents’ house. As a wee guy, I would constantly bug Darlene to play it with me.
